Herring school

This is a pretty common sight, especially at river mouths or shores with brackish waters. At first I thought those were asams but when I found a few scattered along the beach, they don't look quite like it. A typical school will look like this from afar http://lh5.google.com/lycanders/RoMDI5n2MjI/AA...

Sunsets!

Here's my share of sunset pics taken during fishing. Sometimes it worthwhile putting down the fishing rod for a few minutes just to watch the sun set :) http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/3459/sunset1gr4.jpg http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/203/sunset2cm8.jpg http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/157...

Juvenile fishes

Most of us probably had caught these fishes before but seldom see them as juveniles. Here's what I have: A rabbitfish ~2cm http://lh4.google.com/lycanders/RoME2pn2MrI/AAAAAAAAAOo/uBa6oXKqL3w/s800/rabbitfish.jpg A flathead ~6cm. (I can't be certain of the id though, it looks very similar to a goby) h...

Squid eats sea lice

Here's an interesting observation. I was catching some crustaceans and small fishes at a beach and I was bitten by sea lices. They're about half a cm in length and they can burrow into sand. Anyway, I held them in captivity to take some pictures while I gather more specimens. Shortly I caught a baby...

First of all, welcome to hlf. Glad to see you taking interest in fishing. Handlines are fine for fishing but if you're fishing from shore, you're generally restricted to jetty fishing because you cannot cast far without a fishing rod. I would actually advise getting a rod and reel instead if you don...

Re: Rule #1. SIMPLICITY

A very well written post, r4024bd. :) Simplicity is one of the strong points of handlining. The more simple a system gets, the less chance of overall system failure. It is also useful to have handlines on occasions when it is inconvenient to travel with bulky tackles. Here are my some of m...
