interesting account of your fishing experience.
You fish quite a bit with your dad ... definitely a good way top bond.
Btw just a note to you yuheng ...
I suggest you try not to use your "hand" to catch every fish ...
Some fish may not be friendly and some are seriously ... poisonous !

hey gohyuheng.....u noe the west coast there ah....near the mercedes centre there hor is my favourite seawater spot sia....the bridge there downstair gt water.......gt todak,alot of baby queenies gt tamban and the bumpnose treavally and the best still the halfbeak fish...

Peace, I'm new here. Where is the downstream of the jurong lake ? I just went to the canal near the Lakeside Primary but did not catch any fish

The canal you were fishing at flows into Jurong Lake. Jurong Lake releases its excess water into Sungei Bajau Kanan, it's the one of the river where boatmen park their boats and bring anglers for offshore fishing. You must be mindful when fishing in river especially during rainy days. The water level and current can raise fast when they release water from Jurong Lake.

What is a suitable setup to fish there ?

A 6-7 feet rod rated 8-15lbs paired with shimano 2500 sized reel will probably suit you. It depends what sort of fishing you want to do, ie. baiting or luring.

By the way, what fishes are there in the canal ? I saw some black coloured fishes there, wondering what it is ..
