Mangrove swamp exploration

Post by Peace »

Here's some pics to share from my trip to a mangrove swamp today. There was a heavy downpour an hour after I arrived there, luckily there was a big piece of canvas someone stashed among the grass which I used for shelter. :raincloud:

This one should be a tree climbing crab judging from the shape of the carapace.

This is the crab; it has very hairy legs

A very tiny prawn I found under a wooden plank, it was redder when I first saw it.

I manage to find a sarong worm this time :)

I didn't see any mud crab holes that day, it didn't cross my mind that I should be looking out for one. I really wanted to take a pic of one. :( I did see lots of mud lobster burrows but from what I read they dig very deep down. I was about to challenge it with my spade but the first hit shows that the ground is too hard. How did those lobsters do it? They're very smart by making their burrows on such hard ground.

The entrance to the burrow is usually covered with fresh mud pile.

Excavating the mud lobster's lair sounds like a laborous task. I need to gather strong men to help me out on this one. Everyone grab a changkul and start digging!

Hey I didn't mention anything about money  I will try another spot to look out for these lobster burrow, if the ground is soft, I will try digging for them. I will look out for mud crab burrows as well.

From what I heard, people use a piece of strong flexible wire and bend it into a hook shape. Insert it into the tunnel with the hook's side facing upward till you go over/under the crab. Give it a twist and start yanking the crab out. Well, I bet it's easier said than done.

dunno about the fexible wire. but when you pull it out, won't the hook shaped wire go back to its original shape and u get a straight wire instead of a crab?
