A revisit to the beautiful streams in the woods. I never liked walking this much but I know every time it is well worth it. ;)

I found this freshwater crab because I saw a piece of leaf litter moved in the stream, sometimes it really pays to take attention to little details. :D

A bigger one I spotted in another stream. Parathepulsa maculata

Caught a prawn too.

Forest snakehead

Saw this big Yar Kang on my way back, I got caught in the rain because I spent too much time trying to uncover the leaves it was hiding under. The centipede can really move fast! 0.o

The common barbs and bettas in the stream

The silly snakehead takes the bread once again . I think it might be a black snakehead.

Yes, I've fatten up eating those crabs. ::x: (Kidding! :p)

I've gotten more interested since I last spotted the freshwater crabs. It occured to me that they're not as uncommon as I had thought, just a matter of how to look for it. I decided to revisit several of the streams I came across before to check for crabs. Indeed on this trip, I discovered yet another stream that inhabits these freshwater crabs. I've observed about 6-7 crabs in that stream alone, but they were all small in size and most of them had lost limbs. (Probably due to frequent territorial fights in the limited space)

I will check out other potential streams too on my future trips there, it's amazing how we never notice something obvious when not looking for it. ;)

Checking out the first stream where I saw the freshwater crab, spotted one that is a little larger than the previous one.

Spotted a Copper-cheeked Frog on a stream where I didn't find any crabs

On the furthest stream I've checked that day, which I surprisingly spotted more crabs.

A varied species of butterflies gathered near the water.

First time encounter with a bright red damselfly, pretty isn't it?

A picture tells a thousand words ..

Look at those termites ...
the center row worker ants ... busy ferrying food back to the nest ...
while two neatly lined up GUARDS guarded the workers' safety while they work ...
cool isn't it ?

A simple photo and we have learnt something from it ...
Thanks Peace coz he was the one who pointed out the "words" to me. ;)

Haha yes, I too didn't really take notice of it till I tried to take a photo of them. Here's a better picture to show the soldier termites guarding the trail while the worker termites travel back and forth.

Hey Tere, it's about time you go visit your lizards again. ;)

StreetMonkey, Singapore got lots of established nature trails, I recommend starting with the one at Macritchie reservoir, long trail and lots of stuff to see.

Today's crab hunt brings some fruitful results. 3 out of the 4 potential sites I checked today have crabs sighted, totaling 6 out of 8 spots in all inhabited with crabs. The 2 is questionable due to inaccessibility to inner parts of the water area.

This is the first crab I came across today, and a very special one. The lava red is simply beautiful, how I wish I can bring it home. <3

Some of the crabs caught today.

A male crab with one bigger claw.

Some kind of worm that kind of looks like a leech. Look at its jaws... 0.o

Spotted this Malesian frog in a puddle, I got tricked by it and ended up sinking both feets knee deep.

A red jumping spider on a tree bark.

A pair of butterflies on the trail.

A bird (I think olive winged bulbul) bathing in a stream.

Today's trip is interrupted by the sudden downpour, it seems so hot early in morning I didn't think it was going to rain at all today. Anyway, I saw a couple of frogs today and a snake having a good meal. ;)

I spotted this coppercheek near a stream and started to get close to it, just then I heard a shriek nearby. It turns out that it's one of his friends in distress, a snake has ambushed and dragged him up a tree.

The snake climbed up pretty fast and wastes no time devouring the little fellow.

A big gulp

Video of the snake finishing the frog, listen to the frog cry.
