Hi Allen ... and welcome to HLF :rose:

Your setup is fine. 10kg line weight is about 22lbs, so try not to exceed that. I assume that the 1.7 is in metres, that wouldn't be a very long rod but if your spot don't require you to cast very far, you'll be fine. Since you're new to fishing, just try using this setup in all the places you fish in and see how suitable or not suitable it is, and then upgrade your tackles accordingly. When you're more into Surf Fishing later on, you probably will want to get a longer rod and a bigger reel.

Happy fishing. :flower:

To some extend it will. Fishes don't see colours the same across species, and colours do get absorbed as it goes deeper down the water, red being the first colour to go off. Line colours will affect fishing more in clear waters where there is higher visibility. That said, some fishes aren't spooked by the presence of lines, grouper being a very good example.

You can read more about lines and colours here: http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/scie ... color.aspx

If you like using braided line, Powerpro is definitely a good choice. For 20 dollars, I believe you can get 150 yards.

It depends on your reel capacity. Usually the reel will have a list of amount of line you can load per diameter or lbs of line. Braided are typically thinner than mono given the same strength which gives it an edge for casting. Braided will have no stretch unlike mono though, it can be a good or bad thing depending how you use it.

Mono are often sold in longer length and typically cheaper too, so if you're sharing the lines between two people on a tight budget, mono might just be the way to go. Changi Pro is not a bad place to shop, they have wide variety of tackles at competitive prices. Or you can visit their sister shop Team 7 at Yishun.

Alley, you forgot to tell Allen must use Shock Leader If casting with Braided Line. Also must put Handiplas on Index Finger incase got cuts.

Braided line lesser stretch, thus can feel the faintest tug tug and as it is thinner, it cuts through current easily.

Allen, we are around ... just we too busy fishing and travelling around. Alley is our representative. Hee Hee
