kinda confused on the rig even tho i am using it, the split shot put where, length of leader, retrieval

My apologies for the late reply, I've been too distracted with some issues lately. 
To make things simple, I've drawn a diagram for you but you don't need to follow it strictly. Working the rig is a lot like using rubber lures, you can work it wit constant retrieve but it's typically better to let it slowly sink down and picking it back up just before it hits the bottom. It's easier to work it if you know the terrain well. Sinker size depends on the depth and current, if there's a particular location and depth you want to reach, you will need suitable sinker size and/or casting ahead of the spot to compensate the displacement caused by current and line drag.
