Apart from the first picture, the rest are Mayan Cichlids. I'm not too sure what the first fish is but it looks kind of like a Redbelly tilapia (more pictures). Nice catches by the way. :D

haha thanks, got no time for coastal fishing grounds so decide to do some inland waterways instead. The mayans doesn't look red!

The red isn't always prominent or can be absent, I guess it can be due to the environment it dwells in.

This one should be of the same species as the one in the first photo, it's lacking the reddish tinge though. Then again it could possibly be a crossbred cichlid.

sure. i was just thinking our canals and small waterways are all infested with hybrid cichlids, what could be the cause?

It has a lot to do with fish hobbyists who release unwanted pets into our waterways. I'm guessing cichlids can be naturally crossbred and with all the different cichlids dumped into our waters it's not surprising to see many new 'alien' fishes. I don't think the fish in the original post is a crossbred though.

Still, there chichlids and are fun to catch though.
Good bait for barramundi or fishes that thrive in canals.
Urrrgh, no time to fish now~

Sorry to go off topic. I tried using manyan cichlids as live baits, but they died really fast. Feel kind of bad. Is there a way to hook them so that they don't get mortally injured?

Hmm, I've never really tried hooking a cichlid as bait but I reckon it's the same with herrings and scads. Just don't hook too close to the vital parts of the fish and they should be fine. You can try hooking slightly infront of caudal peduncle (the part between the body and tail), this part will give you the most grip. If light casting is used, you hook just below its dorsal fin, but not too deep down the body.

Sometimes the fish dies because of trauma from out of water too long or impact of the cast as well.

Patrick2405,
I used to catch a lot of these at the river beside Whampoa South Blk 49 (catch & released). First you need to throw lots of bread (don't waste food. use expired bread or bread skin) to create a frenzy then use a light sinker with 4 hooks. Many huge Tilapia (10 - 11 inches length) and Cichild. Not been there for 2 years though(busy working on my anti-snug tackle for rocky shoreline).
