Fish ID please

Post by Kst »

Sorry to bother you guys, this was a fish I caught in a canal with both fresh water supply and sea water when the tide comes in. I caught it using pork. Initially I thought it was a juvenile orange-spotted grouper because my friend caught a mature orange-spotter grouper shortly after. After looking at pictures of marble gobies, I'm starting to have second thoughts.

From the first picture, the dorsal fins really don't look like its a grouper. On the other hand, those eyes were exactly the same as the mature orange-spotter grouper my friend caught. Please advise!

It's is a goby for sure ... but which species ... from the pics ... it looks like a Golden Tank Goby.

Yea, it's most likely the golden tank goby. I've caught them from both saltwater and freshwater stream that leads to the sea before.

Most of our canals lead back to the sea ...
You be surprised more species are living in it than you can imagine.
Ang zo kee aplenty and another local favourite, leather jackets.
Delicious eating fish if you managed to get the nice size ones.
Another surprise ... kbl aka kim bak lor ...
They do come into canals ... the big ones I mean ! :mischieve:

So next time when you see ah laus fishing in chow long kang ...
don't laugh at them ... they know what they are doing.

The canal mouth is a better spot, that's where you're like to get kbls. There are lots of sandflies in the beach beside it though. :sweatdrop: People I spoke to told me there are large milkfish that can be caught there as well. For me, I only caught sand whitings and catfishes.
