Hi longislandtea, what rig were you using and what sort of place were you fishing from? What's the size of your hook and baitfish?

Okay, if you're sending the bait fish down to the bottom, it might be better to use a rig with a long hook line as opposed to a typical apollo rig. Firstly, the short trace of apollo won't give the baitfish much freedom to swim around and it will die pretty quickly. Certain fishes especially the fast swimmers tend to grab the bait and go but may not immediately swallow it. They will feel the tension of your line immediately due to the short hookline and may let go of the bait fish if they're not too hungry. A long trace will give it that little extra time to take in the bait.

As for the case of cable car rig, Needlefishes(todak) are common suspects of run and miss scenarios. Needlefishes seldom take and swallow the bait on the spot, they tend to hold the bait and move a distance before swallowing it.

I would also suggest using a slightly larger hook for better hook set. Larger hooks will have wider gap which has better chance of gripping the inner surface of the mouth of large fishes. Unless your bait fish is really small, there's not many reasons to use smaller hooks.

Hm...I also have a lot of those encounter where the hookup keep missing when using baitfish. Try using free spool with float and long leader, let the fish run for a while before striking, usually will confirm hook up but have high chance of gut hook. Every useful if you dont intend to release the fish and know the correct depth to target the correct species you want :)

However, try not to let out too much line when fishing in rocky/pillered areas, the fish can just take the bait and run into cover....
Cablecar rig is very good for live baiting, as mentioned above, however floaters work to, but you have to look at the current and adjust to it, which can be annoying... :S
Urrrgh, no time to fish now~

yea. . . peace's words best described the possibilities why you aren't having successful hook-ups.

please exercise lots of patience along with your rigs. do not panic . . . do not let the excitement gets the better of you . . . =)
