I am no expert to this as well haha! but well i have only caught todaks with bait
they really are pretty irritating fish running but nvr swallow so hard to hook but well it may be different for lures! haha
I feel there is no need for steel wire as they dont really cut through the leader but can cause abrasion to the line higher poundage maybe
steel wire probably only for the sharper tooth predators such as barracudas and macks
i have seen some guy use a noose to catch todaks haha anyway cheers
i have hooked up a rather large one at bedok on a cable car though!
but now i seldom see them swimming on topwater, Anyone clarify if there is season? cause like at the start of the year see so many todaks at the surface of the water.................. :) :) :)
cheers!

My method of landing Todaks is by Fly fishing.
I use a 5 wt weight forward floating line attach a 6 lb,9 ft leader with a size 12 Mustad hook.
The hook is bare, attach a small piece of prawn meat, cast and present hook to Todaks.
Upon casting strip line fast so that the hook with the prawn meat will not sink too fast.
Works Like A Charm.

Live baitfish works best for me so far, it easily brings their guard down and they will likely disregard your heavy leaders. I've caught them on hard lures before but it usually takes quite a few misses before you set hook on one.

so light leaders like 15lb will work?

I won't say it will definitely work because line weight is only one of the factors. Generally lighter lines are more effective than heavier ones because not only are they less visible but they also let the bait present more naturally.
