Err hi guys,

I am quite new to fishing and im vry noob:P Hope all anglers would care to share some tips on fishing at bjt so...yeah(btw i dont have a surf rod)

1.Increase my odds of catching mid to large fish(above 700g, im aiming for all species)
2.Is it a good idea to fish overnight on a weekday alone at bjt(will other anglers b there)
3.Advice for catching baitfish(tamban) and larger catfish(shark catfish not eeltails)

My setup is Eupro Salty Fighter PE 0.8-2.0, Ryobi Applause 2000 w 20lb braid.I fish payponds and caught abt 1 kilo fish but its too costly so decided to give bedok jetty a shot tho its kinda dead...probably heading out next week cos apparently theres better tide?

Well thanks alot for taking time to read this...hope to get some good advice from you guys? Again thanks alot for your help guys:)

Hi Ultra_noob, welcome to HLF. While it does take some luck to encounter mid to large size fishes on the jetty, what you can do is be vigilant in watching your rods. If you see small twitches or long duration of inactivity on your rod, it could be sign that your bait have been partially or totally gone and may no longer be as attractive to a larger fish. Check your baits periodically. Pay extra attention during change of tides and when there's high activity of bait fishes.

I wouldn't advice fishing alone overnight on the jetty simply because there's no one to look after your stuff when you're asleep. It is not uncommon for fishing tackles or other personal belongings to get stolen there even in broad daylight. If you know a few regulars there, it'll be safer as they can keep a look out for you or take turns to watch the rods and belongings.

For tambans, they're more active on fast current during daybreak and evenings. Sometimes you can see them swimming around but they just won't bite. So try your best to catch for sufficient use when they're biting. Use those hand tied tambans they sell on the jetty or from tackle shops, they're pretty effective. Watch for those uncles who keep landing tambans, fish around them and make friends with them, they might give you some useful pointers. For marine catfish, just use lsbf rig and cast out in the direction of the open sea.

Your tackle can handle relatively large size fish but you may have problems casting heavy weights which might be required during strong currents. Good luck on your trip to Bedok Jetty, it's going to be slack tide next week but current starts picking up near weekend. That's probably the better days to try.

I my self have not landed anything huge at the jetty
Wolf herring below a kg
Todak above a kg
3 5-600g flat heads
Small flounder
Honestly nothing to talk about although I frequent the jetty pretty often
LSBF is the way to go and then if its not too much trouble clip on a cable car rig as well
Tambans feed all the time but best to go on the right tide
Recently lost a huge take which sent my shimano ultegra GS heavy x2 action rod in a nice bend although the fish just bit right through my 35lb leader haha
Probably a tengirri arggg
But anyway live dead tamban are the best
For prawns when targeting big fish live ones do the trick while dead ones are easily stolen by small fish

Hi Manfred, welcome to HLF. There will be debris or scattered corals along the outer stretch of the jetty. With many other snags from other anglers over time, you get lots of lines tangled with the debris and rocks as well, making it even more prone to snags.

Unless that particular spot has fish biting or history of good takes, just shift a few degrees away from it when casting.

If you're adventurous enough, you might wanna use an Apollo rig with a live prawn and cast in between the pillars! There's lots of structures there for fishes to hide, and that makes ideal spot to cast! However it comes with high risks as with strong currents your sinker might fall into a small hole and get stuck or if your drag is too loose, the fish will run into the structures and you'll either get stuck or your line will burst off from the abrasion. So make sure your drag is tight and be alert for any sudden takes!

if that is so is it good to use a grapnel sinker or a pyramid sinker?

The grapnel and pyramid sinkers are meant to grip onto the seafloor due to the shape and design of the sinker, this will help your bait will stay there so that the current or wind doesn't move your rig so much. However bedok jetty is notorious for snags at the bottom, I would suggest using the normal sinkers over the grapnel or pyramid
