Re: Peacock bass and temensis
The first difference you should notice is the shape between the Peacock Cichlid and Speckled Pavon(Temensis). Pavon has a more slender body. Peacock Bass tend to be more greenish in general while Pavon has a more greyish colour to it. Pavon also has a black blotch right behind its eye.
Re: Peacock bass and temensis
They are all peacock bass. Temensis is a species that can grow to a bigger size and have some distinct characteristics.
These fish can hybridise. Generally, there are a dozen or so known species that comes from south america. The aquarium shops sometimes still stock some imported peacock bass fry with new names. The species we have here is most likely Cichla ocellaris, Cichla temensis and some look like Cichla orinocensis. As hobbyists release their fish sometimes, so there are hybrids in the reservoirs.

Re: Peacock bass and temensis
Wow so the two most common species is PBs and temensis. So the PB is the butterfly peacock bass or the butterfly variant? And so there are two types of temensis the peacock pavon and the speckled pavon rite? Just to clarify
Re: Peacock bass and temensis
PB is the name of all of these similar looking fishes. Butterfly PB may refers to Cichla ocellaris.
The speckled type and the other type of Temensis is likely the same fish. The speckled form is a mid-juvenile pattern. There are pictures of a few fish which look very big size yet it retain the speckled form. Don't know why. Maybe like goldfish. Some goldfish keep the black colour even when it grows very big.
