Baby PB at Jurong Lake
Been a long time since gone fishing. The itch had to be treated, so visited Jurong Lake which is near to my house armed with my Surecatch telescopic rod in my bag and boxful of lures.
First I decided to try something new and different. Why not try Berkley Gulp 3" Minnows (Silver color). I had the Saltwater version which I had tried at Pasir Ris Pond to no results. Attached the minnow to a small hook along with a split shot and cast the rig in the lake. On the first cast. while reeling back slowly with small jerks I felt a bite and set the hook. It felt like a small fish, but when I reeled in the little monster I witnessed a fantastic dance performance all around the water surface. It was a small Peacock Bass, but jumped and jumped so fiercely that at one point I thought I lost the fish...
At the end I vanquished the little demon: This specimen was around 20-25 cm, I think. It was perfectly hooked in it's lips similar to my previous Mangrove Jack from PRP. Pity I was not consistent after this catch.
This little experimentation (of using Saltwater Gulp in Freshwater ) worked and I got 2 more bites later but I failed to hookup them... After that I tried other lures like spoon, crankbait, minnow, frog etc just for practice, but didn't catch anything.
This was my best day of fishing since this is my first catch ever on artificial lure / soft plastics, I've been trying so hard or so long

Imageshack is always down
Here is the photo:
This is the second time I went to Jurong Lake even though it is very near to my house. I stay in Jurong East.
Nice catches u got there in ur CR thread.
This was my first catch on lure and so I kept the PB to consume.
BTW, I didn't bleed the PB. Will it taste ok?

Good start with catches on artificial lures, I think rubbers work wonderful with minimal play of the angler. The waggle of its tail look very natural on descend or with retrieve. With rubbers you will sometimes end up losing its tail because of it.

Re: Baby PB at Jurong Lake
actually im not sure.... but i tried two methods....
1. keep it alive until before cooking, clear out the fish but leave the scales on then leave it to steam.... this way the meat feels kinda chewy....
2. bleed it straight after catching, then clear everything including the scales and steam it, tastes like snapper....
lols jurong east where? maybe find one day free we fish together?

Ohh... I took the fish home, washed it and dumped it in freezer, didn't bleed it. It had rough scales like a sand paper and was not smelling bad as some people have reported PBs to smell badly (even if they are freshly caught).
Wife will boil/fry the fish this weekend in mustard curry Let's see how well it tastes.
Is there any video on how to bleed the fish, I saw a page where it was shown in images where to cut and bleed, but couldn't get it properly...
I stay in Jurong East Street 21 near the Mosque, kinda in-between Jurong Lake and Pandan Reservoir. So I shuffle between the two spots. Sure would like to join you and learn some stuff from you

Why so surprised? Can't married people fish? Yes, there's less time for fishing with all the responsibilities added up... But still there's passion for fishing...
BTW I'm 28, but not even 1 year old as far as fishing is concerned

The Peacock Bass was fried whole with spices:
It was tasty and very fresh, there were very few bones too.

Re: Baby PB at Jurong Lake
Yes, that's true, it's easier to communicate in mother tongue...
We usually make curry of boiled fresh fish, but that day we were feeling lazy and made a quick fish fry. Also we were apprehensive as how the fish will taste as we were eating it for the first time...
Nevertheless, it tasted good.
