CR: One Chermin

Post by Peace » Mon May 28, 2007 10:21 am

I caught this Diamond Trevally over the weekend at my usual spot on live prawns. I didn't have to wait long before the fish start peeling line off my reel. I wasn't aware of it as I was busy with something else; the fish got a head start and pull away some distance before I start sprinting for my rod.

This chermin is 1.5kg, would be better if it's a little smaller to fit in a plate. Smaller chermins tend to taste better too.

That's a nice size.
I've never tasted Chermins before though.
Would like to try one one of these days.

Went back to the spot in hope to catch another chermin with a friend. Unfortunately, we didn't encounter any. Towards the end, we took out our handlines and start hunting, and got a consolation snapper each. :D

Also caught two cuttlefish that kept stealing our bait.

Do you keep them alive?

Desley, the fishes were caught near end of the day before packing up so the fish wasn't in the icebox for too long, therefore still looking pretty fresh. For offshore cases, the amount of ice provided by boatman are usually not enough or not crushed to properly preserve the fish.

Ice should be crushed into small pieces instead of one big chunk so it can be in contact with more area of the fishes. Of course this melts the ice significantly faster therefore requiring quite a bit more ice but in my opinion is worth it. The fishes will look better at the end of the day, and fresher too. :)
