ah fatt kelong

Post by rookie »

The long waited trip to ah fatt kelong is finally here, I’m bring my family up north to the sibu kelong with my parents and the kids. Heard about the selar filled up those big ice cooler box from 2 weeks ago, thus really looking forward to it. This is also the first time my parents and the 2 kids going to the kelong. (jigger is going with us too)

Met up with DesT and his group of young man at tg lemans jetty. Our group got more than 10pax this round, should be fun.

Upon reaching the kelong, it is pretty packed. Can,t get a sleeping space yet, gotta wait until after lunch. Thus, setup the tackle instead.

From observation, looks like the selar are nowhere to be found!! ****, this is bad.
Walking around the kelong to survey, siao liao, no kang tao this time…

Anyway, to cut short the CR and replace with photo instead.

Summary: my wife caught more sotong than me, I caught plenty of todak and I can catch nothing else, and I take the opportunity to show my boy how to fish. Bro jigger was with me, and he caught a big todak using half halfbeak and that is a big bait.

Let move on to the pic

Night come, and nothing I catch is interesting… this is abit special though

The super needle beak todak, foul hook
Image

One sotong from me, that’s all for the night…
Image

After a cold shower for the boy, he is still is pretty hype up and excited.
Image

2nd day

Bro jigger used a cut half halfbeak and cast it out, after immediately, he got a strong pull, with the drag on, he reel scream for a good few seconds, before the fish let us the bait.

Reel back, rehook and cast out again, this time, he is prepared and another strong take again! Line was peeling out so fast and we can almost see the bare spool. Close the bail and strike, fish onz!!

This is the first time he is fighting a todak, and a pretty big one, he is pretty excited, and up come the fish.
Image

DesT again, using his noodle rod to get todak and my boy was given a chance to try it out.
Image

Image

My boy then come to me, asking me to help him get a todak.

So, cast out and waited, and I got a take. Once hooked on solidly, pass my rod to the boy, show him out to crank and pump the rod.

He was fighting the fish on his own.
Image

After a while, the fish was brough close to the kelong, I help him to hoist up the fish.

My daughter is learning another skill instead…

Night fall, this our catch
Image

The 2nd night is pretty much more interesting, I gave up fishing and end up chatting with DesT and coy, Jack, Francis, Nimo, Richard, etc…

One fisho caught 2 barra within 15mins span of time, one weight at 5kg and the next one at 3.44kg. both are given out to interested party. And the bigger barra was chop up by our chef…

Come to 4am, rain starts to pour… good time to CARRY ON sleeping

Rain didn’t really stop till the time we are leaving…

Goodbye kelong, see you again.

Wah monsoon season you also chiong kelong, but frankly that's when the Selars come in. It does seem odd that Selars are totally gone just after two weeks. I've also noticed the Selars coming into Singapore waters since last month, I've personally caught quite a few. :D

Your boy seems to he having fun with the todaks, I like his doodle of the big fish eating the smaller one. Good catch on the squids too. The weather can be rough during monsoon season, be sure to know where the life vests are kept. :)

edit:
The todak does seem different from the normal ones we catch. I notice it has a very flat ended tail, interesting. :)

Wow !!! Rookie trying to poison his junior into fishing heh !

What a way to spend their school holidays ... a visit to the Kelong.
I am sure they had lots of fun and a memorable trip.

Being to a kelong once with Desleyhan and family ... it was really relaxing and enjoyable.
However, the hassle of travelling and transfer always put me off for another trip.

Thanks for sharing the pics with us ... you missing fishing quite alot.

And Merry X'mas to you and family rookie ... happy holidays ~ :fish: :cookie: :donut: :muffin: :fish2:

Is there any way to go to ah fatt kelong without driving? Like with boat or ferry from singapore?

I don't think there's a direct boat service to the kelong from Singapore due to the distance. There are transport services (minivans) that fetches you from your doorstep to the jetty and back. It's still by road, but it saves you the trouble of driving yourself.

If you have the contact of the kelong, you want to ask them if they also provide such a service. It's better this way since they would know exactly where to drop you off and pick you up to the kelong. There are a few people advertising on fk for this type of fishinf transport services too.
