My 2nd Offshore CR 12th Mar 2007

Post by desleyhan »

This would be my 2nd Offshore ..

Date: 12th Mar 2007 (Mon)
Anglers: Eddie, Ken, Kevin O'Hara, Steven, Wifey & Me.
Boat: James's Boat
Embarked: Punggol Marina Pier 3
Time: 8am to 6pm

About 1 hour into the action, Kevin's Orange-spotted Grouper was the first catch of the day ..... We estimated it to be about 4 kg ...

Then my rod shriek, and up comes the second catch of the day ...
Javelin Grunter aka Jio Lor
Image Image

Then Ken's turn to land this 2 species - Chocolate Hind, Indian Grouper aka Orh Gau Gu and Diamond Trevally aka Jio Beng (Chermin).

And when we landed onshore back at Punggol Marina, we headed straight to the eatery near by and guess what?

The Grouper was our dinner.
A Big Shout Out to Kevin O'Hara for being so gracious with his catch.
'Ho Say Liao - Grouper .... Steam and Sweet & Sour'.

Total catch: 1 Orange-spotted Grouper, 1 Javelin Grunter, 1 Indian Grouper, 1 Diamond Trevally & 1 Sea Worm?

We had loads of fun!

Well guys, let me know if i'd made mistakes on the names of any of the fishes. I know for sure the last pic isn't just a sea-worm ..... :p

Nice trip, looks like everyone enjoyed themselves. :) That's a big grouper from Kevin , all that shopping for the fishing tackles sure paid off. ;) Best of all, everyone got together to feast on the fresh tasty grouper. :D

Just for a little enrichment, the grunt you caught is in fact a Longhead Grunter (Guhuud). They look similar to jio lor and we often mistaken one for the other. Here's a simple physical comparison on both fish:

Image Image

The first and easiest way to identify a Longhead Grunt is the hard and protruded gill cover. Javelin Grunters don't have that. Longhead Grunts have a longer head(hence, its name), you can tell by the distance from its eye to its pectoral fin.

Lastly, the worm appears to be a Bristle Worm

They are carnivorous and can swim and hunt; it is usually not by accident that they end up on our hooks. They have venomous bristles that break off on touch, so handle them using a pair of pliers.

Thanks for sharing your catch.

Like Angelfishing said, the fishes will not like having the bristles stinging their mouth when they attempt to eat the worm. Maybe exceptions for fishes like the trigger fish with long and hard beak, able to break the bristles down. I saw it once on discovery channel on how the triggerfish disarms the sea urchin. :D

I'm glad you enjoyed the trip, the grouper adrenaline must be still pumping through your system. :mischieve: Yes, do take the time before the next trip to learn more about tackles and choose your gears wisely. I hope to see your catch report again.

Here's a  to your prized catch. ;)
