There was no plan for me to go Rompin this year.
However, a group of my new known fishing kakis will like to trip catching a Sail.
So I arranged this trip for 9-10July which I know it is still too early for Sail in Rompin.
2days before the trip call up Jason, the fishing guide to check if there is Sail there and he told me that he just came back and no Sail.
He ask if we want to postpone but we wanted to give it a shoot.
1st Days
There were no action for the whole but expect on Sabiki & mirco jigs.
Move to 4 different spot and there were no sail to be spoted.
Sudden boatman call out "Dorado" and they were all around our boat.
The fun start and never end till we need to leave as sky is getting dark.
Altougth there is no Sail, all of us get our 1st Mahi Mahi.
Each of us took 1 each and cook on the spot 1. Other are release.

We were planning to return next day for the Dorado but boatman told us another caught 8 Sails.

So on day 2 we try our luck again on Sail.
Hope was high as we saw bird circleing in the sky.
There were a take after some 1hour of waiting and a unexpected guess arrive. It's a small Marlin and my 1st too.

Than come a surprise.
A sail took our Sabiki bait and had a quick run for few sec before line burst.
Next another sail took a bait for a UL setup and a 2500 reel get striped in no time.
We did managed to end the day with 3 more sail with 1 est 40kgs.

That's a nice gamble early on the sailfish season and a beautiful Marlin you've caught. :D Just a question, how common are Marlin in Rompin compared to Sailfish? Those Dorados look really challenging with your light tackles and was merciless striped by those papa sailfishes.

Good report and thanks for sharing the exciting videos of the fight.

Hi Peace,
From the boatman catching a Marlin is like striking 4D.

Used to be common some 10yrs ago but they were overfished and these days hardly see any.

Nice CR from Rompin Sails ... Marlin I mean.

Yes I agreed, Rompin is pretty over-fish and Sails size are getting smaller each year.
The Sails no.s are decreasing and Marlin is almost impossible there.

Nice catch on the Dorados ... make me excited for my Sails trip in October.
Wish me luck ! :clover:
