I know today is 11.11.11 ... but we prefer 7Eleven !

It's the rojak gang trip, a chance to make more friends too ...

Almost became fly kite trip no. 2 for me coz we did not place advance order for live prawns when it was a long weekend.
And lucky they managed to find 3Kg of SMALL prawns after much searching here and there. Thank you both !
One trip we had so much prawns and Ricky got his schedule mixed up and did not appear.
This trip we almost went without prawns ! Phew ...

It was almost 9am and we quickly got on board Ricky's boat and head out to spot.

It was suppose to be a good fishing day but you can forecast the tides, the current ...
Pray for good weather and we got it ... it was sunny the whole day ...
But we forgot about the wind !
Surface was choppy and it's pretty a rock and roll trip.
Sinkers were flying and our baits were kinda small !

Nothing much we can do so just fish on and pray for wind to calm down ... even just 1 hour !

YES ! Spanish flag of the Southern ... so many of them and so huge !
If you did not catch any of these "tee boon" here ... consider yourself lucky.
It was one after another ... big big small small ... they were like following me everywhere !
Pest of the Southern.

I was trying out light jigging for the first half of the morning.
So did not feel anything until i changed to baiting ...
First drop of bait and the tug tug tug hit me fast and strong.
And there go for me ... started my local produce collection ! LOL !

Well ... it's pretty fun, at least there is something to keep me on my toes !
You won't know when a biggie will strike !

A surprise visitor, Rocket in Sing !

Despite the strong wind and choppy waters ... an arrow squid followed my bait up.
It was a nice surprise and we need it as bait badly ...

Ricky saw and scream from in front the boat to keep for dinner ...
But I guess all the eyes were on me to use it as bait.
A timely catch indeed ...

Remembering how one of my kakis used a small piece if the wing and landed a 14kg grouper ...
I cut off one of it;s wing and hook on as bait ...
It was drop, touch and go !!!
Up came a beautiful parrot fish ... and soon the squid was cut up into smaller pieces and shared by all. :D

Rocket was a super bait of the day ...
I myself lost two big bird ... one burst and line snapped ... no chance for you to fight !
Other kakis using the squid had a few takes which resulted in defeat as well ...
All giants come out to play today.

We will be back for more revenge !!!

Giant Killing Virgin Offshore Trip !!!

What is 40g or even 100g jigs ... when he was using 300-500g in luconia ... hahaha

Simon was trying out jigging for the first time in local waters ...
Sadly we did not expect the current to be this strong ... all we have was 30-40g jig and a 100g one.
He was determined to carry on trying as most of us landed the local produce, Spanish flag.

It was past noon and he realized it was GK first trip so it has to catch something and it better not be local produce !
His prayers answered with a double hook up of a nice ang zhor and another kaki hook up a rare guhood.

It set up the mood for all and everyone started to fish even more seriously.

Overall catch for the day ... close to 20 fishes.
I would consider it a lucky strike trip.
We almost thought it's the end when only a small chermin was landed till noon time.
Wind got stronger and we were drifting very fast.
Size 8 sinkers was flying kite and it was very difficult to fish.
Luckily the wind came down a little toward late afternoon ...
And catch rate pick up suddenly wit nice size groupers and parrot flying into the ice-box.

Met a few new kakis but I guess it might be their fist and last trip with Ricky.
His fishing style is hard to get adjust unless you go with a 给钱看海 attitude !

Till we can wet our lines in Southern again, tight lines everyone ~ :clover:

Here's more action ...

After losing a few big takes ... I finally decided it's time to use stella as a stella.
Drag tighten and the first vitim was a big bird, another parrot fish !
There was no chance for this bird to get away ... no fight of course ... it's all the way up and show face !
Well ... it's time I need to break the spell.

And we see another grouper landed shortly after ...

Hmmm... just curious.. would someone get discriminated for handlining onboard? :sweatdrop:

Offshore handlinling ?

The question here is not getting discriminated ...
All is welcome to do any form of fishing as you may wish ...
After all .. you paid your fair share so why not ?

The problem is ... is it suitable ?
Let's take Ricky, this particular boatman which took us to Southern islands for fishing ...
He is the most hard working boatman you can ever find in Singapore.
Shifting spot every 10-15mins at times ... drifting with water depth between 15-36m
And taking into consideration at least 6-8 anglers on board ...
Will your handline keep crossing other's line ?
The most frustrating occasion ever to happen while offshore fishing ... cross line.
Fishing time is very much wasted trying to clear up the plate of "char bee hoon" and especially when there is a frenzy !
This is also one reason why many anglers do not like to fish with newbies.
More often than not ... they end up crossing other's line.

In my opinion, the best way to enjoy handlining in local offshore ..
get 1-2 kakis and charter a small boat, not sampan lah ... those small one with shelter.
Those boat will be able to go close to reefs, corals and break water which is perfect for handlining. ;)

The problem of crossing lines occur because anglers use different types of line. For handliners, they tend to be using mono lines. It's a lot thicker than braided line so it gets pushed by the current more. The curvature of the line underwater will be more as well and it'll look like the handline is not parallel to the person's braided line beside you. It takes good line control and visualization of how your handline underwater to get along with other anglers.

To be fair, any lines will cross if the boat is overcrowded or if angler is inexperienced regardless of what type of lines used.

Back to the topic, that looks quite a good catch from Southern Islands considering the strong winds we experience recently. I've heard several anglers having luck with jigs, or rather inchiku on Ah Eng's boat, it's sure worth trying out your jigs with him. :D

A well written fishing report.

Ahhh.. roger that. Lines entangling is definitely something no one would want, especially when time is of much importance. Now that I think of it, with the wind slapping harshly and the boat rocking I might knock someone unconscious while casting, even though I'm pretty accurate on land. :p Guess I'll gather some experiences on a small boat with braided lines first! Thanks for the advices!

And yup, very nice report indeed!
