Only the mighty FOUR !

Four anglers on a fishing trip to Kuching ? You kidding ?

No ... I'm serious.
We had to explained few times during the trip ...
The boatman asked about it, the van driver asked, those who know about our trip asked too ...
even the restaurant boss at the jetty was shocked when we told him we just returned from a fishing trip.
就你们四个?
是的!

Thanks to Macko for arranging this trip despite his reluctance ...
Made worst when there were not enough kakis to make up the no.s
And Vidic was still thinking I was joking when told ... let's go, u me n him :p

We had to cut short the no.s of fishing days and increase an extra day of rest and relax in Kuching.
Dates set, tickets booked ... let's go fishing ! :D

Traveling in smaller no.s made everything much easier too ...
The mighty four arrived in Kuching, Ariva Gateway hotel by noon time ...
Quickly checked into our hotel and off we went to find food !

Image

Pretty decent service apartment with everything you will need from cooking to washing.
All we really need is a bed for a good night's sleep and a nice shower before we set off for some serious fishing out at sea !

We passed by this roasted meat restaurant last year. It was closed due to being a Sunday.
This time ... it was open so how can we not give it a try ?
A little excited as it was our first meal in Kuching.
Was having some high expectation as we saw that they were using charcoal to roast the birds.

Shop was pretty crowded but it didn't take too long for our orders to be served.
Total disappointment !
So glad we did not order one whole duck and chicken LOL !!

After a not very satisfying lunch ... it's shopping time.
Vidic did a great job to have googled and located the major shopping centers.
Here we go ... let's shop !

The Spring !

New shopping complex in Kuching ...
window shop around, before long we were seated at an out door cafe lim kopi, eat nasi !

Nothing very special about shopping in Kuching.
Hello ... we came from Singapore ? 还shop不够?
Just wanna look see get a feel of it ...
Still prefer street shopping when ever overseas, which we will get to do on our last day of this trip.

Off we went for grocery shopping ...
The boatman will provide most of the sundries this time as there were very few anglers.
We just buy peanuts, tit bits, chewing gum and ribena !

Yes. Top Spot again ...

Food is yummy and price is not expensive.
Vidic and myself went around scanning at the rows of seafood ...
Notice interesting way of choosing food by the locals.
They are given a plate n they pick greens, meat and whatever they want from the display counter, and the stall will fry it for them.
We were a little lost initially then decided to order their "specialty"

Pic of lobster in butter and cheese did not do justice to the food ...
It taste marvelously good.
The usual oyster cake, the yummy satay is a must have.
My favorite bidin, a jungle fern and a local delicacies, bamboo chicken.

Food again ??
Ehh ... this is a fishing forum leh !

We were surprised when Macko took us to the hotel for breakfast.
Quite a decent spread ...
And it is only then we realize we were not the only one in the hotel ...
There were many others. haha ...
Coz hotel looked so empty despite we zipped in and out of it a few times.

At the jetty ... waiting for tide to rise a little so that we can board the boat.

I will not forget how I slipped myself onto the boat ...
Tide was low thus boat is way below the jetty platfoam and only way across was via a plank slanted at less than 45 degree !
with 4 men assisting me and I was so worried I will dropped into sea.
So glad no one videoed it ! bwhahaha !!!

By the time we reach tenggiri spot ...
All were so tired !

Water was not friendly and Simon had "fainted" by then.
He barely can have his dinner but we were eager to fish.

Catch rate ain't good.
We were too "dizzy" to be worried about no catch to bring back.

Not sure what happens during the first night ..
As the story teller, me ... fainted !
Sweet dreams like sleeping in a rocking cradle ... lol !

It was an exciting day of fishing.

Captain took us round to pick up small groupers ...
Then for small red chicken ... just to be sure we do not return with empty ice box.
And when we told him we only have one day of fishing left ...
He took us to red dino land !
And up comes one after another ... big red mama red chicken.
Sizes were much bigger compared to last years and they come in schools !

And the final finale ... when night falls ...
We hit tenggiri fenzy !
We were really lucky as we had ran out of bait ... And now all we need is a metal jig.
Pin tail works too but a little too expensive esp during a frenzy ...
We can practically hear and see splashes in the night.
Line crosses ... u see deck hand moving around with a baton ! =X
Yes. You do not want flipping tenggiri all around the boat ...

By midnite ... 4 of the ice boxes already filled with fishes.

A good seafood lunch before we head back to hotel.

We didn't try this restaurant the last time we were here ...
We will definitely eat here should we be heading to Kuching for fishing again.

The jelly fish was really good and took the lady boss a lot of coaxing before we agreed to try.
It was super duper yummy !!

We did miss a heart beat when she came forward with the bill ...
Giving us a way too friendly smile ... hee hee ...
Damn scary lor

We were the one laughing when we saw the bill ...
We are sure to come back for more !
Good food at reasonable price !

It's great to see you guys again and I do miss your catch report. 4 anglers to that big boat is a luxury! I would love to fish in that much comfort, you should have asked me along. ::x: Congrats on the good harvest, I personally wouldn't mind fishing more of those yummy triggerfish.

Good catch report write up dBs, I see you haven't lost your touch. ;)

What a funnnnnnnnnn trip ! Makes ME wanna go again ! :(

Great accommodation - Service Apartment ! King size bed all by myself :p ~ At the end of fishing, just dump those dirty clothes and wash and dryer. And its all relaxing when u are back home !

Wide variety of delicious food - Yummy ! Even though they are serving the same food we had in Singapore. But it just taste different !. They have their own sauces, combine with their own style of cooking. I personally like all of them ! From most expensive mouse spot grouper(thanks to boss ! lol  !), baby lobster, to the simplest kolo mee, sarawak laksa, chicken rice etc Really enjoy it very much ! Just eattttttttttttttttt ! Slurrrrrpp****
After that, was a shop and walk non stop ! Lotsa of unique local handicraft there in Kuching ! If you are the type is into wooden furniture and handicraft, this is the place you should go ! (It makes you want to "Everything also want to buy back" because you wont get the same cheap pricing if you see them in Singapore ~ )

FishinG - This is the most interesting part, i learnt lotsa of tricks fishing in Kuching. From tying of rigs for apollo, poundage and size of hook used, to tying of tengirri rig. It was line joint here joint there joint until crazy !

Jigging was fun. I am those who can't sit and wait for fish to bite. So it was Jig non stop ! Whack non stop ! if only my rod wasn't so taxing with the little heavy jigs :( Was relieved that i got my "lok jiak" jig back, lol ! I still wanna jig ! Lets go again ~!~ (Ok la, maybe a special expedition before we go again ? *wink* *wink* :eyebrow: )
I felt the difference, as the jigs weight from 100grams onwards, its hard to set hook using a soft tip rod with soft backbone, this results in lotsa of throw hook from the fish. I have to strike like 3 times to ensure the hook was properly set. Lesson learnt ! Preferably use a PE2-4 for 100g jig setup
I also notice that the take on the jig was rather fierce ! It bite, whack so hard and dash that my rod bends into a "C" shape !! ("C" shape on eupro rod ain't funny, i can sense it gonna break anytime, lol) Perhaps, its tIme to invest into a better one ?

The company was great ! We have lotsa of fun and laughter and i enjoyed it very much ~ Definietely a YES if it is a 4 person trip again
Thanks to dBs, Simon & Macko
Fishing is unquestionably a form of madness, but happily, for once bitten, there is no cure. --Francis
