How far away from the shore do you need to place the trap to best attract mud crabs?

I might be wrong but I think the intertidal zone is a good area for mud crabs. It's the area of shore between the highest and lowest tide. Their burrows are usually near the high tide zone but they move around the intertidal zone to feed.

What if the highest tide place is a slope made out of rocks and lowest tide place also a slope made out of rocks

are there any gaps/holes in the rocks? mud crabs also do hide in those places too.

You can put it deeper where the rock ends or where it won't be exposed during low tide. The way your trap stays hidden from prying eyes of passerbys, that is if you intend to leave the trap unattended.
