The area you mentioned does have some very good places to handline but unfortunately, they're all currently inaccessible due to construction works. Those places include the entire stretch of Punggol 17th ave/Track 24 where there are seawalls. I believe you can still fish on Punggol Jetty(End), though there is very little space to move around. There's also Changi Kelong Walk, but that place is also currently under renovation.

It's not easy to fish with handlines from beach because you can't cast very far out, you need to fish from an extended platform from the shore like a jetty. If you don't mind fishing at canals, you can try them during high tides. You should give Bedok or Labrador Jetty a try too if you want to handline.

Sorry it's not much of a help, for I too am out of shore spots for handlining. Welcome to HLF RoystonVoon. By the way, what are the 20 odd fishes that you've caught at Punggol end?

Those fishes you've caught at Punggol end are saltwater fishes, although some may survive in brackish water but they most probably will die in freshwater. Marine tank needs lots of care and monitoring. The live prawns you buy from tackle shops and those dead prawns you buy from wet/supermarkets are marine prawns as well. You will need saltwater, aeration and food to keep them alive. Frankly, it'll be easier to buy. :)

That may take awhile to explain but in short, you need to feel the type and intensity of the bite. Basically, you need to wait for the fish to get the pointy part of the hook into its mouth. When that happens, usually you can feel the weight of the fish when you taut the line. That's when you give the line a jerk to set the hook.

Of course that won't happen all the time for several reasons. The fish may be too small for the hook, not in the feeding mood or cautious in approaching your bait, or even your actions spooking the fish. You eventually will get the feel of it the more you fish. The "let it eat until something comes up" is a way of fishing but the techniques and rigs will be different. But basically it involves letting the fish swallow the entire bait, lodging the hook deep in its guts.

It's best if you can set the hook earliest possible to prevent gut hooking the fish. Because sometimes we land fish they we don't want to keep, and gut hooking will most likely kill the fish even if we intend to release it back. Another alternative is use of circle hooks to prevent this, but that's another topic altogether.

Good luck on your fishing trip tomorrow! :)

Where exactly at Changi Point are you referring to? Sorry, I'm not too familiar with the east side. :p

Just a quick question to everyone, I'm new and kind of clueless but does this forum service just on specific area or country? I live in a small town in central North Carolina and I eat sleep and breathe fishing. :sweatdrop: I'm just looking for a place that has the same addiction as I do.

Welcome to HLF, Lococrazy. We're a Singapore based website but we welcome all anglers across the globe. There will be topics that a lot of members here may not be able to relate to with regards to fishing in your locality as fishing techniques and fish behaviour may differ. That said, we're happy to engage in general fishing discussions and sharing of catch reports. Enjoy your stay here. :flower:
