Not a difficult question but it will be easier for us to help you if you can clarify further what you actually interested to find out ...

You have thrown us a big net and trying to catch everything worr ...

What sort of offshore fishing are you looking at ?

Basically ... most of the local offshore anglers either head Changi waters or Southern islands.
There are the two common places most anglers head to for local offshore fishing.
Tackle used for both places can be very different due to different water depth and species targeted at.

Rods ... a PE 1-3 for Changi or even lighter if you seeking for some trill fishing.
However ... the disadvantage of using light tackle for offshore fishing is when you hit a stingray or biggie.
For Southern islands ... it depends on which charter you are using ... coz each has their own different spots.
A PE 1-3 or 2-4 depending on where you are fishing and what species you are targeting at.

Sometimes ... we do look at current flow of the day too ...
When the current flow is strong and you are using a light tackle ...
The rod might not be able to take heavier sinker.
If you can't bring the bait to the seabed ... chances of catching a fish is slim to almost zero !
That's why it is call bottom fishing.

Rigs ... the two basic ones ... apollo or lsbf aka long snood bottom feeder.
You can find detailed write-up in HLF's Fishing Rigs section : http://www.handlinefishing.com/howtofish/knotsrigs/

We'll start off your SOS from here and see what others infos you will like to know from here.
The best way to get yourself hook onto offshore fishing ...
Tag along a trip and try it out ... if you lucky enough to hit the right kakis on 1st try ...
You are on for some serious fishing and there is no turning back ! :clover:

Wow, thanks for the deep info and tips ! :) A little curious though..coz i saw some ppl using a rather light tackle for boat fishing. Can i also use a normal 5ft rod . lets say around 20-30 bucks sold at shops ?

Well ... why not ?

I started offshore fishing with a rod and reel combo under $100 moons ago.
As a beginner, I always advise do not spend on tackle.
You won't know if you will enjoy offshore fishing.

I have an offshore rod, my "powerful" yellow banana that cost only $29.
I took it to Rompin just over the weekend and landed some many fish with it.
But ... we are experienced anglers. We know how to handle if we hit a biggie.
Besides wanting to land the fish, you do not want to cross others line too.
