Huh ??

This is not pet's section meh ?

Ok ... lousy joke ...
Just wanna share the Ezidri FD1000 food dehydrator with ya all.
It's a wonderful little machine which dries up almost everything from fruits to meat and even herbs and flowers.
Zillion of things you can experiment it with ...
Of course my main motive is to make food for my precious Scott & Junior, then ourself :p

Food Dehydrator

Food dehydrating is gaining it's popularity among pets owner's circle in recent years ...
I came to know about this wonderful machine and got really interested with it.
While trying to gather information before actually getting one ... I realized there is very little infos available.
Not the technical specs infos ... is how to use this machine in our local context.
Those infos you manage to find are selling the dehydrating treats so they are not disclosing much and treating it like top secrets.

Decided to share as much infos as I can regarding food dehydrating.
For those who are keen to get one, hope these information is able to help you in the initial stage of using the dehydrator.
For those who already own a dehydrator ... do share with us ideas and your secret recipes.
Be it for making jerky for the four leggy friends or for making fruits roll-ups or treats for the family ..
food dehydrating is a wonderful machine to have in the kitchen.
Is is also the first food related "toy" for me as I am not a kitchen person and hates cooking.

To the best of my knowledge ... there are two brand available in Singapore.
The more expensive Excalibur (square shaped) and the most popular Ezidri (round shaped).

Excalibur is available from : Lee Hung Scientific Pte Ltd

Ezidri is available from : K-industrial Services Pte Ltd

Image

Ezidri it is for me.

You can get it at CK Tang basement household electrical appliances section.
One and only place that sell it in Singapore.

There is two models in Sing, Snack Maker selling at $218 while the one I bought is FD1000 which is a hundred dollars more at $318.
The difference between the two models, FD100 has adjustable temperature controls.
Comes with 5 trays, expandable up to 30 trays.

Additional trays are selling at $15 per piece while the soft mesh and solid mesh are selling at $5 each.
Solid mesh is good for making food roll-ups or when dehydrating meat.
Oil or juices will be collected on it so you have to use a solid mesh at the bottom tier unless what you are making is already dry.
Soft mesh will help prevent food from sticking onto the tray itself which make washing much easier.
I got myself a soft mesh for each tray I have.

The actual product, Ezidri Food Dehydrator FD1000.

Why Ezidri FD1000 ?

* Expandable to a maximum of 30 trays.

* Temp Control up to 65C

* Material: Food Grade - Abs Plastic Polycarbonate

* 2 years Warranty

* Ezidri is better than rectangular dehydrators because the unique airflow prevents cross contamination

This point is tested and proven ... I tried dehydrating lemon and fish together, on different trays of course.
The fish did not absorb any lemon scent and the dehydrated lemon didn't smell fishy at all ~

* Round trays offer better airflow than square trays.

Everything can be wash except for the base unit which house the motor and fan.
Air is sucked into the base unit from under and ventilated evenly through each tray.
Do not place paper or napkin under the base unit !
Papers might get sucked into the air suction unit and thus blocked airflow and caused the base unit to overheat.
Take care not to pour water or drop stuff into the air ventilation hole at the center of the base unit too ...

There is zillion of things you can dehydrate with Ezidri Dehydrator.
From fruits to meat, veggies or herbs, even flowers !
For country with four seasons, the people do harvest their own produce and dehydrate them for use during winter.
For us living in one season Singapore, we are blessed with imported food throughout the year.
So why do we need a dehydrator ?

Well ... the answer is pretty simple.
We can dehydrate our own food less the artificial colorings and preservatives which are present in commercial packed food.
For me, main objective of getting the dehydrator is to make meat jerky for my two dogs.
Commercial treats are expensive to buy and home made treats are much healthier.
We can make a whole lot of dehydrated products for own use too.

Will add in slowly the time required for types of food as I start using this amazingly machine call the Ezidri FD1000 Food Dehydrator ! :yay:

Begin my experiment with grapes.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Lesson 1 learnt : It takes longer hours to dehydrate fruits than meat.

Rasins ... buy the seedless type of grapes, green or purple up to personal preference.
Wash and dry fruits before laying them onto the tray.
It takes approximately 36hrs for the grapes to becomes raisins.

Add the raisin to yogurt or use it for baking bread or cake.
You may also soak them in rum and you have some very nice sweeten raisin with a tinge of liquor.
Excellent tit bits for the adults.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Dried Longan !

One of my favorite fruit be it fresh or dehydrated.
I enjoy eating it in sweet soup with ginkgo nuts too ...

You will be surprised that the longans turn back to clear colour when cook in sweet soup just like fresh longans.
Unlike the commercial products which is brown when cook.
So this is the time of the year whereby we can dehydrate as much longans as we can and keep for use till the next season arrives.
It takes about 12-16 hours to dehydrate longans.

Image

Japanese purple sweet potatoes.
Something for the four legged friends.
You can use the purple, red or yellow sweet potatoes.
With or without skin is all up to personal preferences.
It depends on how thick you cut the fruit ... it takes about 4-6 hrs to dehydrate.

Image

Apples !

Why am I dehydrating apples when we get to eat fresh apple through out the year.
Well ... dehydrated apples can be kept for up to two years !
You can eat it where ever you want it.
Good natural tit bits for fishing trips too ~
5-6hrs is all it takes to dehydrate apples.

Image

Image

Pineapple ... takes about 12 -16 hours to dehydrate.

Choose the very ripe ones to dehydrate.
Excellent tit bits or can use it as toppings for your yogurt.

Image

Image

Lemon !

Keep them in a air tight jar and you can have lemon tea or drink anytime.
No messy lemon to cut and you use every single slice of the lemon. No throwing away of unused lemon.
Simply add it to a glass of water with a spoonful of honey and you get a nice glass of honey lemon drink.

While you are dehydrating the lemon, the aroma of the lemon fills the room with a sweet natural fragrance too ...
12hrs if you want thicker slices.

Image

Strawberry ... another delicious toppings for yogurt.
depending on the thickness of the cut ... takes about 5-6 hours to dehydrate.
My girl took only few minutes to finish them up for me =)

First attempt to make duck jerky for the four legged kids of mine.
I have never bought or cook a duck in my life till now. haha ...
Hope it won't turn out a mess ...

Bought this whole duck at NTUC for $13.80

Image

After removing all other parts, skins and fats ... these are all is left for making into jerky.

Image

Rest of the duck ... keep for making soup.
How about salted duck soup ?
Nothing goes to waste except for the fats.

Image

All it takes was 6 hours and I have two tray of dehydrated duck jerky !

Image

Image

Would have to pay $6.90 for the portion for commercially produced products.
I get twice as much for making it myself.
It is definitely great saving for me in the long run with healthier choice for my furkids.
Good bye to preservatives, food coloring and all ~

Image

Specially for Scott ~
As Junior is allergic to chicken, these are solely for Scott's consumption.

Bought a chicken breast for $2.80 at NTUC ... and I get this much of dehydrated jerky in 6 hours.
Would have to pay another $6.90 if I were to buy them for the mess produced type.
Some people do sell dehydrated jerky and it would have cost me $10 for about the same portion.
It's a breeze to prepare and they are definitely delicious coz they drool as you hold up the jerky for them !

Will be getting the chicken breast from the wet market, fresher and it only cost $2 !

Image

Image

Another satisfied home made product for my two boys ... beef jerky.

Bought a piece of lean beef from NTUC for $7.80 and after 6 hours ...
I get three bagful of crispy beef jerky. Good to last them for a week !

I used to pay $12 for a 100g ...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Fish Fish Fish ....

It's time for us to head back to Sedili for mackerel hunting ~ lol !

Bought the ready to use fish fillet from NTUC again ...
Trying out a thicker cut so that end product will be crunchy to eat.
Bought one packet of batang and one packet of toman.
After 16hrs of dehydrating ... we get a handful of crispy fish jerky.
It must be really good coz Junior keep yelping for more !
If they want any fresher than these ... they will have to eat it raw ~

Time to go fishing and now I have another way to "cook" our catch ! :D

Yes yes, a very interesting machine indeed.
The dehydrator is selling at $318 and you might need some extra accessories at extra cost.
The major concern when buying this machine is the electrical bills.
However ... given the cost saving for my case ... it is definitely a good investment.

I already started saving the moment I start using it.
The electrical bill is not going to cost more than the amount I spend on buying treats each month.
And now I get to eat some healthier fruits too ...

bill yet to arrive ... but most likely you see a smile on my face instead. hahaha ...
We spend an average of $200 per month on the boys treats ...
so I doubt the electrical bill gonna exceed this amt taking into account I make treats for them once a week.
It's is definitely gonna spell into saving for us. :D

Finding it tricky to cut the meat to unify size and thickness ...
I had the butcher to sliced it for me.
Wasn't very happy about it coz find it too thick which will translate to longer dehydrating hours.
I used a roller the flatten the meat slice before laying them onto the trays.
To my surprise ... it took merely 2 hours more and the jerky were thick and crunchy.
The exact texture I would like the jerky to be.
I will have an easier time preparing beef jerky in future ... just head to NTUC Finest and leave the rest to the Ezidri Dehydrator ~

I only realize I had bought some farm breed fish filet while preparing the meat for dehydrating.
No wonder the low price ... two packets for $5+
The meat feels oily to touch and very thin and slimy to feel.
Wasn't easy slicing it up for dehydrating even in semi-defrost state.
After just 5 hours in the dehydrator, I got a plate of crunchy fish treats.
Scott enjoys it as much as the beef while Junior is reluctant to eat it.
Didn't bother him at all even Scott took his share and ate it.

Trying out a new meat and recipe ...
Porky heart with English parsley.
The health benefits of parsley is beyond being just a table garnish.
I choose to use fresh parsley instead of bottled off the shelve products.
All you need is wash, dry and chopped it up finely and add onto the meat.
The dehydrated porky heart came out a beautiful dark red with speckle of green.
Lovely combo ~ <3

2nd attempt at making duck jerky from a fresh whole duck.
This time round, the bird cost 30cents cheaper at $13.50.
I tried to extract as much meat as I can compared to the previous round.
Take about 6 hours and I have two plateful of duck jerky to last a good week.
It is still cheaper to make than to buy .... commercial type cost $6.90/pkt and they eat 3-4 pkts a week !

I am getting the hang of using this Ezidri Dehydrator ...
From the pics ... can tell I am able to lay the meat closer and more neatly compared to initial tries.
I laid them far apart and took me longer hours to get it done.
Now that I can get the butcher to help me slice up the meat ... things is getting easier ~

Any idea what to dry next ?

A friend was saying scallop but the scallop itself is not "fresh" so it really defeats the purpose.
I actually couldn't wait to go Rompin and bring back ice-boxful of arrow squid !
Those should make wonderful soup ingredients ~ :D

Welcome on board HLF HungryB. :coffee:

Well ... I guess it is still a little too soon to tell coz I started using it toward late August.
And since it's a new toy ... I have been drying many things as long as I find time.
According to a friend who has been using it for almost two years ... she said her bill didn't really increased much.
Probably between $5-$10 more a month.
From what I see after using it ... it all depends on good planning.
Try not to dry one thing at a time. With good planning ... we need to use the dehydrator probably for 6-12hrs a week.

Those 4 lemon I dried are kept in an air tight container and am enjoying lemon tea as and when I wish to.
Not a single slice will go to waste, add one slice to a glass of warm water and honey to taste.
A glass of soothing lemon drink, as good as using fresh lemon.
Lemon ain't expensive to buy but each time ... we throw away half coz we can't finish the whole lemon.
It's saving in the long run and healthier food, healthier living for all in the family.

Will share more infos as I go along using the dehydrator.
It is still not common locally despite it being sold in Sing for 8 years or more already.
There is really very limited infos on the internet ... and those you able to find are selling the dehydrated products ...
so don't expect them to share any infos with you or tell you how to use the dehydrator ... lol ! :p

Have a nice day ahead and a warm glass of lemon tea ? ;)

Sweet soup made with dehydrated longan.
Added in red dates and ginko nuts ... perfect dessert for the very health conscious.
The soup color is very much lighter but taste twice as good ...
The longan is crunchy and making you think you are eating the fresh fruit itself.
The soup has this natural aroma of fresh longan ...
very different from using those dried longan which we used to buy from medical hall.

Now I am starting to worry if I have enough stock to last till CNY ... :p

Always choose lean meat for dehydrating ...
Try to trim all of the fats off the meat slice because fats can become rancid and will spoil the meat.
I choose to go with beef eye round, the leanest meat I can find.
This time ... I have the whole slab of meat instead of the cut up ones.
And have the butcher to sliced them up for me.
I got 1 kg of nicely sliced up beef eye round.

Image

Dehydrated 6 pieces of it as a whole.
Good as food when we travel with the dogs.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Rest of the meat were sliced up into long stripes.
All you need to do is use a rolling pin to flatten the meat, cut into desired stripes and lay them onto the dehydrating tray.
Take about 6 hours for the meat to be turned into crunchy jerky.

Image

Image

All the above from 1Kg of beef eye round.

Image

Leave the meat to cool down completely before packing into zip-lock bags.
Store the meat in air-tight container.
As I used up the meat within a week ... I do not store it in the fridge.
You can store the meat in he fridge and it can be good for up to a year if dehydrated properly.

Trying out a new recipe ... Apple Beef Jerky !

Simply means ... wrapped beef around apple.
Cut beef into thin stripes and wrapped it round sliced apple.
I use dehydrated apple as fruit take a longer time to dehydrate.
If fresh apple is used ... it will not dehydrate at the same rate as meat thus the apple will be soft while the meat will end up crunchy.
So ... use dehydrated apple instead of fresh apples.
You get crunchy apple beef jerky in 6 hours.

You may use the apple with the skin on.
I have used organic apple but still choose to remove the skin.
