they can....the 5kg ones espcially!
But when lifted out of the water they immediately puff up.

Relative to its size, it's a poor fighter compared to many fishes. They can do a few short burst but that's about it, the annoying thing about large puffer is that they may challenge you again immediately after you release them. :shiftyeyes:

The one that I caught above also puffed up when removing from water. Landed it, but when I went to take my pliers to de-hook it, it cut my 30 lb line and was squirming away twisting and turning on it's inflated stomach. Couldn't find the hook so let it go just like that...

Wow I got a reply after 5 years :D
Yes Puffer has super strong beak teeth and poisonous so I had used the pliers.
