There's lots of these fish right under the sembawang jetty too! They are relatively easy to catch and can be caught on tamban jigs. Their fins are stiff and spiky, I can imagine that they get stuck easily to your cast net?

fins stuck to net is ok ....what i hate most is the head, bash thru the net ..damn usually after i manage to release its almost a goner.

You're right, the fishes tries to squeeze itself through the net and ends up jammed tighter the more it struggles. The tapered shape of the head and the gill cover keeps them stuck to the net. That's how drift nets work too.

That is the fish under Bedok jetty? :)
I was always wondering what fish were those but never caught one before. I'm so glad HLF was invented!

Do you know how to catch it on rod+reel?

It's not too difficult, just use a set of pre-tied sabiki jig and put very small pieces of prawn meat on it. Lower it a few feet just below the surface below the jetty and they will take it.

I've seen groupers caught using this fish as bait before, but I wouldn't say it's the most effective bait to use though.

It should in the same family as the Freckled Hawkfish but I am not quite sure of the exact species though. I'll look into it.

These are quite common around bedok jetty, I've caught a number of them before.

I tried looking through fishbase, but the slender ones all look rather similar. 😂

The Malabar Glassy Perchlet is one of the likely candidates though.
