preciously at changi kelong area, had 2 fights. one at 3am and another just past midnight. assumptions is ray. the angle of my line being drag is zigzag and when fought back, feels like stuck to something. using 14ft rod and a spool using 40lb line. how to detect it is a ray? and what is the normal size of the hook and bait used to catch this rays? email me at hytewave@hotmail.com and i am really keen to learn more about fishing this fish besides getting standard normal fishes.

Big Rays have a habit of pausing during fights especially when you fight from shore. If the fish is zigzag-ing and feels stuck from time to time, it probably is a ray. You need good leverage power to get it moving again or wait till it decides to move on its own.

Stingrays aren't fussy about bait, but most people will agree that sand whitings are one of the best bait to catch them as it is their natural prey. Stingrays are scavengers too so they'll eat scraps of meat that lies on the bottom of the seabed, that means dead fish, squids or worms will work as well. Size of hook will depend what on the size of the targeted ray, more specifically for the strength of the hook. Because you'll be putting in more strength when fighting rays compared to other fishes, you don't want the hook to give way during the fight. A typical range would be 2/0 - 5/0.

Anglers surf fishing along East coast - Changi beaches will catch one every now and then. Takes patience and lots of luck!
