Marine Catfishes ID discussion
Okay, some of you probably noticed that are no Duris in on the species list. That's because I'm not sure of the identification of their exact species. So if anyone can contribute to this discussion please do so; it can be input of more specimen photos or help identifying them. Thanks!
Probably the most common type of Duri
The golden colour species
The yellow fined ones
The 'big mouth' catfish as Angelfishing calls it

Peace, finally see you kick start the id-ing process of the marine catfishes.
Let me send u scrabbling for panadols.
There are two main types of marine catfishes in local waters. The fork tail catfish and the eel tail catfish.
This is the so called "big mouth" catfish, an eeltailed catfish.

marine catfish are known to be salmon catfish and there are 8 species and which are hard to diffentiate even for experts.

Yes. Its not easy to id catfish even for the experts.farkhead wrote:marine catfish are known to be salmon catfish and there are 8 species and which are hard to diffentiate even for experts.
That's the reason why Peace has taken so long yet reluctant to post the catfishes.
We are clueless as to how to id them.
Hopefully ... with this thread going...we are able to shed some lights on it
thus able to id few of the common one in our waters.

Re: Marine Catfishes ID discussion
Yes, marine catfishes are hard to identify by overall looks alone, and I believe identifying exact species aren't too important unless they can be distinguished from other catfish easily. Like the pictures shown above with obvious distinguishable features. The Eeltail Catfish by Angelfishing should be a Gray eel-catfish (Plotosus Canius) or what we usually call a Gemang. I'm simply basing the identification searching "gemang' under fishbase common name. Still, I would need a better sample photo of the catfish.

The second link doesn't have the tooth patch pattern though. I did took a picture of the tooth pattern but I'm still not sure.
