CR: First success on circle hook
I tried circle hooks a few times before and never had any luck with it, but this time round I finally caught something with it. I used a floating rig with live tamban as bait, I got two hits but sadly only one had the hook set. I think I pulled to quickly when the first took off, not quite a jerk but just fast retrieval. The hook probably didn't set on its own yet. What baffles me though, is the hook was pierced from outside. I can only assume that the mackerel did not swallow the tamban, but merely held the tamban in its mouth sideways when it took a turn, allowing the circle hook to set in.
Fun trip despite the rain interrupting. I had fisher join me later in the day and he caught a green eye squid.

Peace,
Do we need to free or open the spool or release the tension when using circle hooks?
I intend to try this weekend. Cheers.

Re: CR: First success on circle hook
The green eye squid feed throughout all tides, the problem is where you're fishing from. If it's shore like beach or breakwater, you will want high tide when the green eye squids come closer to shore. And yes, they can come really shallow especially in the night. If you're fishing for jetty, you wouldn't want the current to be too fast. It makes it difficult to drop the jig to where you want, plus the squids will be hiding behind structures or shallower places which are sheltered from stronger current.

Yes, we've met several times in the chat room. Punggol isn't exactly my playground, the best person to answer you would be dBs. But just in case she doesn't reply here, I'd say it is very possible to get squids there this weekend night.

Oops, sorry I missed your post. In short, you can free spool. The resistance from the sinker alone is usually enough to let the circle hook work.fish-ng wrote:Peace,

The principle of using circle hook is such that the extra angled tip will pivot on the corner of the fish mouth as the hook gets drawn out of its throat. The tip of the hook will pierce when the fish's head turn away from the line (this is what happens most of the time when fish feels something wrong). In order to pierce, it will still need some form of tension but not as much as the normal fishing hooks we use. And because the piercing will only happen at a precise angle of turn, we should not be setting the hook.
Re: CR: First success on circle hook
tot circle hooks should set hook itself without any jerking? normally the fish will bite n swim away with the bait n normally the circle hooks will just set hook itself on the side of the mouth. most fishes caught on circle hooks always kana the side of their mouth de.

Hi Slimy ... welcome to HLF.
Targeting for green eyes ... Punggol is the answer.
I have not play there for quite a while so not sure how's the bite rate nowadays.
Try going on up rising tide ... when the water level hit the beach ...
simply cast your squid jig along either side of the "I" of the jetty.
Forget about the T junction ... unless you know the terrain well.
Facing the sea ... left side is a safer zone, lower chances of sangkot-ing.
Right side has plenty of rocky seabeds, so chance are you might lose a jig or two.
If playing on the right, try not to let your jig sink to the floor.
The shallow beaches is best at full tides.
O ... one more tippy for you ...
Look out those floating plastic bags ...
Look under it !
Good luck and do share with us your catches.
