All overheads have steeper learning curve compared to spinning, especially when it comes to casting. It just takes some practice and getting used to. The new Daiwa Saltist BG is a nice surf reel though it's slightly over 300 for a new one. You can also go for Sealine series which are more affordable.

If budget is a little tight, the surecatch commander will do fine. :) There's no hurry in investing an expensive reel if you're new to it. You can upgrade as you learn to know what you want in a surf reel.

you can also get a spinning reel, almost free from "birds nest".
"birds nest" can be very annoying, espically if it enters your gearing in you reel.(birds nest is where your line tangles up due to your BC feeding out too much fishing line.)

Hi guys like the topic mention juz for beginners..

This coming sunday i'm going on a fishing quest with my family and friends the question is as my friends is a beginner to this sport and still learning where can we go for a good spot for fishing dont mind small fish coz i will be doing hand lining while my friend is using a 6ft rod(which he bought from NTUC cost him$15/-)...

My spot at west coast is good during high tide and hours during high to low tide... The prob is during our journey it's low tide going high tide which only hv juvenile catfish there...So hopefully u guys can recommend me a spot for 6ft rod and handlining..

BTW dont mind travelling this time round coz we manage to secure a car for the whole day event....
Sorry to confuse u coz I'm still new to this sport...

I'd say Bedok Jetty, even when the tambans are not biting there you can bait up the tamban hooks with prawn meat and you can catch a variety of small fish. Since you have your own transport, you could also try Changi Kelong Walk or fish beside SAFYC, those are pretty nice spots too.

Problem is all these spots will be very crowded during weekends so you got to be real early so you can choose where you want to fish.

Since u have a handline and 6 ft rod, I would suggest handline play along the pillars with live prawn or prawn meat while 6ft rod jig for tambans, when live tamban is available u could try floater with live tamban on handline.
