Tips for landing net

Post by murasame »

What length should I get for fishing frm places like bedok jetty? (And where to get from)
Quite scared of pulling mainline up since big todak shook free (and tore my hook off) last time

Personally I'd get a gaff over a net, the ones that can be tied to a rope.
I wanna catch a big fish~~~~

You can measure the height during a spring tide when the water level is at its lowest. Lower your fishing line with a sinker at its end till you reach the water surface and make a marking on the line. You can then measure this length of line using a measuring tape or ruler.

I think some commercially sold iso nets can reach the water during high tide but it can be a problem in low tides. Chances are you need to customize a joining pole like they do for sotong scooping net. If you don't have a landing net, you can drag the fish all the way to the beach too, it's a lot of effort though! You can also get someone with strong tamban jig to 'gaff' the todak for you if the todak isn't too heavy.

I'd choose a rope gaff over landing nets because it's much more portable, especially since I fish alone most of the time. It may be a little harder to hook the fish up but I'm sure it's possible. Also, you're not restricted by the size of the net should a biggie come ;)

I see, the portability of a rope gaff sure is tempting compared to a 3m net lol
I usually fish alone too
Any idea where to get one of these rope gaffs from?

I'm not too sure, I've seen some uncles use something that looks like this

I've been searching but to no avail. Current using a home made one, by sharpening a bent metal rod

Yeah you can DIY the gaff hook, I've seen them sold in tackle shops before but I can't seem to recall which... :x
